Vintage Old World Style from Laude Arts and Gifts

Mother of Pearl and Bronze Rosary
All though it is brand new, this rosary looks like it could have belonged to your grandmother or even great grandmother. The focal point of this vintage style rosary is the ornate centerpiece with an image of our Blessed Lady. This bronze center was hand cast in a new mold made from an antique center. The original came from Europe and was produced in the 1800's. Like the center, the bronze crucifix was also hand cast from a new mold of an antique piece. The original for the crucifix came from France in the 1800's. Both of these pieces have been antiqued to bring out the intricate detail and give the appearance of age.
The Avé and Pater beads are 6mm vintage bleached Mother of Pearl beads. The Avé beads have 3mm fluted antiqued brass bead caps and the Pater beads are accented by antiqued brass basket bead caps. The entire piece comes together to present a brand new rosary that has the appearance of a cherised heirloom.
Please visit my shop, Laude Arts and Gifts, to learn more about this rosary and to see my other handcrafted rosaries and jewelry. Thanks so much for taking the time to look at my rosary.

Chotki - Jesus Beads at Laude Arts and Gifts

Chotki are used for an ancient form of prayer known as the Jesus Prayer. This prayer comes to us from the Eastern Orthodox Church and is a wonderful vehicle for bringing people into contemplative prayer.

Chotki is the Greek term given to Jesus beads. Chotki can have as many as 150 beads and as few as 10 beads or almost any number in between. I personally like Chotki that have 33 beads. It is easy to pray the Jesus prayer 100 times, which is the most common form of the prayer, by going around the Chotki 3 times and then adding one more prayer. I also like it because the 33 beads symbolize the 33 years that Jesus was on this earth. There are many forms of the Jesus Prayer, but the most common form is a quote form is to repeat the simple phrase "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner."

Traditionally, Chotki are strung and I have stayed with tradition by stringing this Chotki. However, I was unhappy with the way my Chotki looked when I constructed it in the usual manner, so I decided to break with tradition and insert a center similar to the centers found in a rosary. I am pleased with this design. I hope you will be too.

This particular Chotki is comprised of black Crucifix Beads from Czechoslovakia. Accenting these beads are handmade bronze beads from Bali. The Center and Crucifid are hand cast bronze. Please visit my shop, Laude Arts and Gifts, to see more information on this Chotki and to view my handcrafted rosaries and jewelry. Thank you for taking the time to look.

Just Listed at HeartFelt Rosaries

Just off the bead board--
Substantial in size, this Rosary honors Saint Benedict with the classic St Benedict Crucifix and simple, black and silver design.
 It will surely please anyone with a devotion to this powerful saint!
See this and more at HeartFelt Rosaries.

ABOUT THE ST BENEDICT MEDAL (from the Benedictine Order's website):

"On the face of the medal is the image of Saint Benedict. In his right hand he holds the cross, the Christian's symbol of salvation. The cross reminds us of the zealous work of evangelizing and civilizing England and Europe carried out mainly by the Benedictine monks and nuns, especially for the sixth to the ninth/tenth centuries.

Rule and Raven

In St. Benedict's left hand is his Rule for Monasteries that could well be summed up in the words of the Prolog exhorting us to "walk in God's ways, with the Gospel as our guide."
On a pedestal to the right of St. Benedict is the poisoned cup, shattered when he made the sign of the cross over it. On a pedestal to the left is a raven about to carry away a loaf of poisoned bread that a jealous enemy had sent to St. Benedict.

C. S. P. B.

Above the cup and the raven are the Latin words: Crux s. patris Benedicti (The Cross of our holy father Benedict). On the margin of the medal, encircling the figure of Benedict, are the Latin words: Eius in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur! (May we be strengthened by his presence in the hour of our death!). Benedictines have always regarded St. Benedict as a special patron of a happy death. He himself died in the chapel at Montecassino while standing with his arms raised up to heaven, supported by the brothers of the monastery, shortly after St. Benedict had received Holy Communion.

Monte Cassino

Below Benedict we read: ex SM Casino MDCCCLXXX (from holy Monte Cassino, 1880). This is the medal struck to commemorate the 1400th anniversary of the birth of Saint Benedict.

Reverse Side of the Medal

[reverse]Crux mihi lux

On the back of the medal, the cross is dominant. On the arms of the cross are the initial letters of a rhythmic Latin prayer: Crux sacra sit mihi lux! Nunquam draco sit mihi dux! (May the holy cross be my light! May the dragon never be my guide!).
In the angles of the cross, the letters C S P B stand for Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti (The cross of our holy father Benedict).

Peace

Above the cross is the word pax (peace), that has been a Benedictine motto for centuries. Around the margin of the back of the medal, the letters V R S N S M V - S M Q L I V B are the initial letters, as mentioned above, of a Latin prayer of exorcism against Satan: Vade retro Satana! Nunquam suade mihi vana! Sunt mala quae libas. Ipse venena bibas! (Begone Satan! Never tempt me with your vanities! What you offer me is evil. Drink the poison yourself!)"

The Peace Prayer of St. Francis Rosary

The Prayer of Saint Francis  has been running through my mind lately.  In light of the shootings in Tucson, I have been reflecting on what it means to act with peace, and my mind keeps returning to this prayer.
Lord make me an instrument of your peace
• Where there is hatred, Let me sow love;
• Where there is injury, pardon;
• Where there is error, truth;
• Where there is doubt, faith;
• Where there is despair, hope;
• Where there is darkness, light;
• And where there is sadness, Joy.

• O Divine Master grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled
• As to console;
• To be understood, as to understand;
• To be loved, as to love.
• For it in giving that we receive,
• It is in pardoning that we are pardoned
• And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

It also occurred to me that the 7 decade configuration of beads in the Franciscan Crown Rosary could easily be adapted for the Peace Prayer of St. Francis.  Each decade could be used as a meditation for each of the lines I have designated above.  The beads would need to be repeated twice, or even three times if you wish to repeat the first verse.
Instead of praying the Hail Mary on each of the decade beads (Ave Beads), one could pray “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.”
On the beads closest to the cross, the same prayers as used in the Franciscan Crown Rosary could be used to complete the Peace Prayer rosary.
As you begin on the medal, the beads closest to the cross are not used until the end of the traditional prayers for the Franciscan Crown Rosary.  Those prayers are as follows:
• After the last decade, pray one Hail Mary each on the fourth and third beads from the Cross to complete 72 years of Mary’s Joy.
• Pray the Our Father (Lord’s Prayer) and the Glory to the Father (Gloria Patri) for the intention of the Holy Father on the 2nd bead from the Cross.
• Pray a Hail Mary on the single bead closest to the Cross.

Elegant Rosary with Sacred Heart of Jesus

Lifetime Guarantee. The Goal is Eternal Life with Jesus. Your rosary should last until then...

The Deep Red of the Red Tiger Eye beads remind me of the Precious Blood that Christ shed for our sins. This is accentuated by the Crown of Thorns around the Crucifix and His Sacred Heart. The faceted black onyx add elegance to this traditional 5-decade, Catholic, Rosary. Each bead is wrapped in bronze wire and the crucifix and center are bronze as well. The reverse of the center is the Miraculous Medal.

January 2011 Give Away Contest

Rosary Bracelet
donated by

Welcome to our first Give Away contest in 2011. The prize for this month's give away contest was donated by Jeanine of Heartfelt Rosaries. I have long been an admirer of Jeanine's creative and well crafted rosaries and jewelry. This bracelet is a prime example of Jeanine's artistry and craftmanship. However, Jeanine can describe it better than I can. In her own words:

This is a 1-decade Rosary bracelet made with a large Swarovski
baguette for the Pater and 6mm Rose Quartz Aves. It is ornamented with seed
beads and more Swarovski and has a solid Sterling Silver Crucifix. It measures 7 1/2 inches and will fit most wrists. For those with larger wrists, I'll make a bigger, more ornate clasp so it fits them, too--they should contact me through my etsy store, Heartfelt Rosaries
(HeartFeltRosaries.com). Lists at $28. Comes in a beautiful golden, beaded organza gift bag, ready for presentation.

To be eligible to win this beautiful bracelet, please see the guidelines below.

But hurry! The constest ends on Sunday, January 30, 2011.

Open to US residents only

Okay…here’s the scoop! The Etsy Rosary Guild is a group of artisans who make beautiful, hand crafted rosaries and jewelry. We are dedicated to using our art as a witness to our faith as well as using it to help support ourselves and our families. Naturally, we want to let the world in on what we are doing, so we have decided to have a monthly give away as a means of advertising our creations. We started doing this in June and so far, our give aways have been enormously successful. We are hoping that you would like to get in on the action.

You can enter as many times as you wish…no purchase necessary. However, if you find that you would like to buy something, we won’t stop you!

Here are the rules. We’ve tried to make it as simple as possible.

To enter, first visit Jeanine's shop and take a look at all the beautiful items she has made. Find your favorite item and come back and tell us about it in a comment on the blog. That’s it! You’re done…if you want to be.

Please leave your email address on each comment that you make in the form of JaneDoe (at) anywhere.com. That way we will be able to contact you if you are the lucky winner.

If you would like to make more entries after visiting Jeanine's shop, here’s how you can do it.

  • Enter one (or more) of the member’s shops listed in the side bar on the right, find something you like and come back here and tell us about it in a comment on the blog. Remember that each comment counts as an entry, so make separate comments for each shop that you visit. That way you can rack up more entries.
  • Sign up to follow our blog. You probably want to do this anyway so that you can learn about all that we are doing and keep an eye out for our next give away. If you already follow our blog, (thank you) and just leave your user ID in a comment
  • Become a Facebook Fan of The Etsy Rosary Guild Team. Leave a comment back here with your Facebook name. Existing fans just leave your Facebook ID here in a separate comment.
  • Blog about our give away on your blog…or anyone else’s blog… and come back here and put a link to the post in a comment.
  • Become one of Jeanine's FaceBook fans, come back here and tell us about it
  • Become a follower of Jeanine's Blog: HeartfeltRosaries. Come back here and tell us about it.
  • Refer our Give Away Contest and our Blog to a friend. Ask them to leave a comment on the contest saying that “(your user ID) referred them. This will give them an entry and will give you yet another entry. Two for the price of one ain’t bad!

Just a reminder: Remember to leave your email address in the form of JaneDoe (at) anywhere.com. That way we can contact you if you are the lucky winner.

Also remember…Comments = Entries! Yaaaay! So leave as many comments as you like. Just click on the word “Comments” at the bottom center of the post and you’re ready to go. Remember, this months contest will end on Sunday, January 30, 2011.

Winning comment/entrant will be chosen by Random.org.

Oh yes, this goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway. Guild members are not eligible to win. While this bums most of us out completely, it means y’all get more chances to win.

Thanks so much for taking the time to give us a look-see and thank you for entering.

St. Therese Sacrifice Beads are back!

After not being able to make these Sacrifice beads for a while, due to challenges in finding the right cord, I now will be offering St. Therese Sacrifice beads again.  These are even better than my original sets, as they are made with solid bronze antique reproduction crucifix and St. Therese medal.

I am offering the Sacrifice beads for $13.00.  Although the picture shows a variety of cord colors, I will only offer the light gold cord, at first.  You can find the listing at  GracefulRosaries.etsy.com .

Here is a better image of the St. Therese medal.

The Word I Will Carry with Me in 2011 - "Breathe"

Abbey of the Arts is one of my favorite blogs.  In a recent post, the author--Christine Valters Paintner--offered an invitation to her readers to choose a word that they would carry with them through the year.  I chose the word "Breathe."

Already, I am finding that one small word can shed new light on situations.  Whether it is simply taking a breath before I speak or thanking God for the gift of life, I can see that it will be a needed reminder for me.

This rosary is one I created today with that word in mind.
